High Island

If you see your journey from place to place not so much as a form of restless wandering, but as the acceptance of an invitation – an invitation to delve more and more deeply into the holy mysteries of place then High Island is for you

High Island or Ardoilean is an island located approximately 2 miles off the west coast of Connemara, close to Claddaghduff and Inishbofin. The island extends to approximately 80 acres mostly island grazing with the benefit of two natural freshwater lakes and some of the most stunning scenery in the west of Ireland.

The history of High Island is fascinating. It is believed that some of the ruins and artifacts date back to 300 BC! The remains of Saint Fechin's 7th-century monastery are located in a sheltered valley to the South Western edge of the island and located directly to the North of the larger of the two freshwater lakes

.

The island is now a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive of special conservation interest for the Barnacle Goose, Fulmar, and Arctic Tern. There is an abundance of birdlife on the island with many types of gulls, fulmars, Manx shearwaters, petrels, and oystercatchers, and even a pair of peregrine falcons breeding each spring
